Rummel tourniquet for the Pringle maneuver

A loop of umbilical tape passed around the hepatoduodenal ligament and threaded through a short length of flexible rubber tubing (the "snugger"); sliding the tubing down and securing it externally with a clamp cinches the tape to occlude inflow.

How it is used

Temporary occlusion of hepatic inflow (Pringle maneuver) during liver resection or trauma, to limit intraoperative hemorrhage.

Clinical tip

It is the classic open-surgery method that liver surgeons carried over when adopting the laparoscopic approach; intermittent clamp/release cycles are used to limit ischemic injury.
