Bioabsorbable staple line reinforcement

A single-use strip of bioabsorbable polyglycolic acid/trimethylene carbonate copolymer scaffold (~0.4 mm thick), loaded onto the linear or circular stapler jaws before firing, absorbed over about 6-7 months.

How it is used

Reinforcement of the staple line in sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass, to reduce bleeding and leakage from the mechanical suture line.

Clinical tip

A case-control study of 626 sleeve gastrectomies used it in 71.9% of cases; a cited systematic review found leak rates below 1% with its use, versus higher rates with no reinforcement or manual oversewing.
