Gastric calibration bougie

A calibrated semi-rigid tube (commonly silicone, 32-40 Fr) passed transorally along the lesser curvature to size the residual gastric tube before stapling.

How it is used

Calibration of the gastric sleeve during laparoscopic or open sleeve gastrectomy, and in pouch creation for gastric bypass.

Clinical tip

A network meta-analysis (15 studies, 2,848 patients) found most centers use <40 Fr (often 36 Fr) to limit long-term weight regain, while ≥40 Fr is associated with fewer leaks without harming 3-year weight loss.
