Intraoperative flexible gastroscope
A standard flexible video-gastroscope used transorally during surgery itself (not postoperatively) for direct visualization and insufflation.
How it is used
Intraoperative leak testing (with or without methylene blue) of the staple line or anastomosis in gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and esophagogastric surgery.
Clinical tip
A series of 252 gastric bypasses found intraoperative endoscopy reliable for reducing gastrojejunal leak rates; the Spanish Association of Surgeons has run basic intraoperative endoscopy training for bariatric surgeons since 2020.
