Pancreatic duct transanastomotic stent
A thin plastic tube placed across a pancreaticojejunal or pancreaticogastric anastomosis, with one end seated in the pancreatic duct and the other exteriorized or left internal, to divert pancreatic juice away from the suture line.
How it is used
Used in high-risk pancreaticojejunostomy (e.g. after a Whipple procedure) with a soft, non-dilated pancreatic duct, to reduce the consequences of an anastomotic leak.
Clinical tip
Its use has become widespread in high-risk pancreaticoenteric anastomoses, but its protective function can be compromised by migration or obstruction: an accepted but imperfect adjunct, not a guarantee against leakage.
