Hemorrhoidal rubber band ligator
A reusable device with a long shaft and a distal tip that grasps hemorrhoidal mucosa (by forceps or suction) and deploys one or more rubber bands around its base, preloaded from an applicator cone.
How it is used
Used in the office or on an outpatient basis, typically with anoscopy, for rubber band ligation of grade I-III internal hemorrhoids: the band strangulates the tissue, which necroses and sloughs off within days; it is a low-risk, quick-recovery alternative to surgical hemorrhoidectomy, which is reserved for more advanced grades.
Clinical tip
The band should be placed at least 1-2 cm above the dentate line to avoid the severe pain caused by somatic innervation of the distal anoderm.
