Tru-cut-type liver core biopsy needle

A spring- or manually-fired core-biopsy needle (14-16G) with a notched inner stylet and outer cutting cannula that, when fired, shears off a cylinder of liver tissue into the notch for histology.

How it is used

Intraoperative targeted liver biopsy of a focal lesion or background parenchyma, under direct vision or ultrasound guidance, during open hepatobiliary surgery.

Clinical tip

The classic two-handed Tru-cut mechanism limits how precisely it can be aimed while separately handling an ultrasound probe, which has driven the development of one-handed disposable alternatives.
