Polyglactin 910 suture (Vicryl)

Synthetic absorbable braided (multifilament) suture made of a copolymer of glycolide and lactide (polyglactin 910), usually coated to improve tissue passage.

How it is used

Used for general soft-tissue approximation, vascular ligatures, and subcutaneous closures where prolonged support is not required, owing to its good handling and knot security.

Clinical tip

Because it loses most of its tensile strength within a few weeks and is fully absorbed in about two months, it is not suited for tissues needing prolonged support such as fascia; its braided structure can harbor bacteria if used in contaminated fields.
