Polydioxanone suture (PDS)
Synthetic absorbable monofilament suture made from a poly(p-dioxanone) polymer, designed to retain tensile strength longer than other synthetic absorbable sutures.
How it is used
Indicated for fascial and abdominal wall closure and other tissues requiring prolonged support during healing, as well as in pediatric cardiac surgery.
Clinical tip
It retains useful strength for several weeks and is not fully absorbed until around six months, much longer than Vicryl or Monocryl; being a stiffer monofilament with memory, it needs extra knot throws for security.
