FFP2/FFP3 (N95-equivalent) respirator for aerosol-generating procedures
A self-filtering facepiece made of layered nonwoven fabric (often melt-blown polypropylene), sealed tightly to the face with a moldable nose clip and elastic straps, classified under the European EN 149 standard (FFP2/FFP3) or the equivalent North American N95/N99 rating.
How it is used
Worn during surgical procedures that generate aerosols or fine airborne particles (bone sawing or drilling, smoke-generating electrocautery, and certain high-risk ENT or airway procedures) to filter small particles that a standard surgical mask does not effectively capture.
Clinical tip
Protection depends both on the filtration class (FFP2 filters a lower percentage of particles than FFP3; N95 is defined similarly) and on a correct facial seal: a seal check should always be performed on donning, since facial hair or a poorly fitted nose clip can defeat most of the protection even with an adequate filter.
