Paraffin (Vaseline) gauze dressing
An open-weave cotton gauze impregnated with soft paraffin (or another petrolatum-based emulsion), supplied as individually wrapped sterile sheets.
How it is used
Applied directly over an open wound, skin-graft donor or recipient site, or a burn, as a non-adherent primary contact layer that lets exudate pass through to an outer absorbent dressing without sticking to or damaging the healing tissue on removal.
Clinical tip
Apply it in a single layer, not bunched up, so exudate can still drain through the mesh, and remove it gently (soaking first if it has stuck) to avoid damaging new epithelium.
