Sequential compression device (SCD)
A pneumatic console that sequentially inflates and deflates the chambers of a sleeve or boot placed on the patient's leg (distal to proximal), creating a venous "milking" effect that increases peak venous blood flow velocity.
How it is used
Mechanical prophylaxis of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism in surgical patients, especially when pharmacological anticoagulation is contraindicated.
Clinical tip
Some models use three-chamber sleeves to achieve circumferential, sequential, gradient compression, avoiding distal blood pooling.
