Hegar cervical dilators
A set of rigid, curved, double-ended metal rods graduated in millimeters and arranged in progressively increasing calibers, typically from about 3 to 26 mm.
How it is used
They are inserted one at a time, from smallest to largest caliber, through the cervical canal (previously stabilized with a Pozzi tenaculum), to progressively widen it before a D&C, hysteroscopy, or placement of other intrauterine instruments.
Clinical tip
Do not skip sizes in the set: always progressing to the next consecutive caliber reduces the risk of a false passage or cervical laceration.
