Uterine sound (hysterometer)
A thin, slightly curved, malleable metal rod graduated in centimeters, with a blunt, rounded tip.
How it is used
It is gently passed through the cervical canal to measure the depth and orientation of the uterine cavity before a D&C, hysteroscopy, IUD insertion, or other intrauterine procedures.
Clinical tip
If resistance is felt, stop and never force it forward: a false passage or uterine perforation typically results from advancing the sound against resistance.
