Cusco's vaginal speculum
A metal or plastic instrument with two hinged, duck-bill-shaped blades that is inserted closed into the vagina and opened with a screw or lever mechanism to separate the vaginal walls.
How it is used
It allows visualization of the cervix and vaginal walls for Pap smears, colposcopy, IUD insertion or removal, and other outpatient gynecologic examinations and procedures.
Clinical tip
Gently warming the speculum (or at least avoiding a cold one) and adding a little lubricant improves patient comfort during the exam.
