Thyroid shield / thyroid collar
A short, flexible collar made of the same lead or lead-equivalent material as the radiation apron, wrapped around the neck and typically closed with a hook-and-loop fastener.
How it is used
Worn together with the lead apron during fluoroscopy or C-arm procedures to specifically shield the thyroid gland, one of the body's more radiosensitive tissues, which lies above the apron's usual coverage.
Clinical tip
Because cumulative-exposure risk is a recognized concern for staff who perform fluoroscopy repeatedly, wearing the thyroid collar is not optional even for a seemingly short case; it should sit above the apron with no gap of exposed neck.
