Umbilical cord clamp

A small single-use plastic device with an irreversible ratchet-locking mechanism, applied across the umbilical cord.

How it is used

It is placed right after birth, about 2-3 cm from the newborn's abdomen, to occlude the cord vessels before cutting, preventing hemorrhage; it should not be confused with an umbilical catheter, which is inserted inside the vessels for neonatal vascular access.

Clinical tip

About 2-3 cm of cord stump should be left under the clamp: too short complicates later maneuvers (such as catheterizing the cord), while too long needlessly delays cord separation.
