Endometrial biopsy cannula (Pipelle)

A thin, flexible, single-use plastic catheter with an internal plunger that, when withdrawn, creates suction inside the tube.

How it is used

It is passed through the cervical canal, usually without anesthesia or prior dilation, to obtain an endometrial sample for evaluating abnormal uterine bleeding or ruling out endometrial hyperplasia or cancer.

Clinical tip

Moving the cannula in and out while rotating it along its axis across the whole cavity increases the amount and representativeness of the sample obtained.
