Bogota bag
A sterile sheet of plastic (an IV fluid or urology irrigation bag, or a sheet cut for the purpose) sutured or stapled to the skin or fascial edges of the abdominal wall as a temporary closure.
How it is used
Used in damage-control laparotomy, abdominal compartment syndrome, or when visceral edema prevents primary fascial closure, allowing planned re-look surgery without compromising containment or raising intra-abdominal pressure.
Clinical tip
A low-cost, universally available solution, but it does not prevent progressive fascial retraction; in resourced centers, negative-pressure wound therapy (VAC) achieves higher rates of definitive fascial closure.
