Jamshidi needle
A rigid, cannulated needle with a cutting bevel and a removable internal stylet, designed to penetrate bone cortex and obtain bone marrow samples.
How it is used
Usually introduced at the posterior iliac crest to aspirate liquid marrow with a syringe and/or obtain a solid core biopsy specimen, for the diagnosis of hematologic and oncologic disease.
Clinical tip
Advanced through the cortex with the stylet in place; withdrawing it allows the syringe to be attached for aspiration, and advancing a little further without the stylet yields the core biopsy specimen.
