Tracheostomy tube
A curved tube, made of plastic or metal, with or without a cuff, designed to be inserted through a tracheal stoma to keep the airway patent.
How it is used
Used to maintain a patent airway after tracheostomy, in patients requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation or with upper airway obstruction.
Clinical tip
Fenestrated tubes allow phonation and facilitate weaning, while non-fenestrated tubes are preferred when there is aspiration risk.
