Otoscope
A handheld instrument with a light source and a magnifying lens, with an interchangeable ear cone (speculum) attached to the tip.
How it is used
Used to examine the external auditory canal and the tympanic membrane, and is basic to routine otolaryngologic examination.
Clinical tip
The speculum should be sized to the patient's canal diameter to obtain a complete view of the eardrum without causing discomfort.
