Nasal packing for epistaxis
Intranasal packing device: a compressed polymer sponge that rehydrates and expands on contact with blood/serum (Merocel-type), or an inflatable balloon catheter (Rapid Rhino-type) that compresses the bleeding mucosa.
How it is used
Control of anterior or posterior epistaxis when cautery fails, in the ENT emergency department or intraoperatively after endoscopic sinonasal surgery.
Clinical tip
In patients with Rendu-Osler-Weber disease, cautery should be avoided and resorbable packing used instead.
