Intraoperative nerve monitoring system (recurrent laryngeal/facial nerve)
Intraoperative electromyography system that records muscle action potentials (e.g. in the vocal or facial muscle) via surface electrodes on the endotracheal tube or needle electrodes, when the nerve is electrically stimulated with a probe.
How it is used
Locates and protects the recurrent laryngeal nerve in thyroidectomy/head and neck surgery, and the facial nerve in parotidectomy or skull-base surgery.
Clinical tip
Classic indications include bulky tumors, recurrences, pediatric patients, and surgery after prior radiotherapy, although some centers use it routinely.
