Carotid shunt
Temporary intraluminal tube with balloons at both ends, inserted into the common and internal carotid to maintain cerebral flow while the artery is clamped and open.
How it is used
Used during carotid endarterectomy when the surgeon decides (selectively or routinely) to shunt in order to maintain cerebral perfusion.
Clinical tip
The balloons fix it in the lumen without needing additional clamps, allowing a shorter arteriotomy and reducing vascular trauma.
