Fogarty balloon catheter

Flexible catheter with an inflatable balloon at the tip, introduced into the vessel through an arteriotomy.

How it is used

Extraction of arterial emboli and thrombi (embolectomy) by inflating the balloon and withdrawing the catheter, dragging out the clot.

Clinical tip

Invented by Thomas J. Fogarty in 1961: it was the starting point of minimally invasive vascular surgery.
