Prostate (core-needle) biopsy gun
A handheld spring-loaded device that fires a needle (typically 18-gauge) forward to shear off a thin cylindrical core of tissue in a fraction of a second.
How it is used
Obtains multiple prostate tissue cores under transrectal or transperineal ultrasound guidance for the histological diagnosis of prostate cancer.
Clinical tip
The transrectal approach requires periprocedural antibiotic prophylaxis because of infection risk; the transperineal route lowers this risk.
