Chalazion clamp (adapted for dermatology)
Racket-shaped clamp with a solid plate and a fenestrated ring that closes over the tissue to fix, evert, and compress its local blood supply, reducing bleeding during sampling.
How it is used
Originally designed for ophthalmologic chalazion surgery, but adopted in dermatology for punch biopsies of oral mucosa, tongue, and lip vermilion where bleeding hinders visualization of the field.
Clinical tip
Infiltrating the anesthetic before placing the clamp is less uncomfortable than infiltrating afterward; the technique is not suitable for the gum.
