Cold-cup biopsy forceps

A long, thin rigid or flexible forceps with small cup-shaped jaws at the tip, passed through the working channel of a cystoscope or ureteroscope.

How it is used

Takes small samples of bladder or upper urinary tract urothelium mechanically (without energy) for the histological diagnosis of suspected lesions or tumours.

Clinical tip

Because it uses no energy, it avoids thermal artefact in the specimen and allows better assessment of detrusor muscle invasion than a resection biopsy.
