Carotid patch angioplasty material
Dacron, PTFE, or bovine pericardium patch used to close the arteriotomy after carotid endarterectomy instead of direct suture, widening the vessel lumen.
How it is used
Patch closure after carotid endarterectomy to reduce restenosis risk compared with primary closure.
Clinical tip
A Cochrane review (14 trials, 2,278 endarterectomies) finds no clearly superior material: synthetics give more mechanical strength, bovine pericardium a lower infection rate.
