Mediastinoscope
A rigid, tubular endoscope with a light source and optics, designed to be inserted through a small cervical incision into the superior mediastinum.
How it is used
Used in cervical mediastinoscopy to visualize and biopsy paratracheal and subcarinal lymph nodes, primarily for lung cancer staging.
Clinical tip
Historically regarded as the gold standard for mediastinal lymph node staging, though its use has declined with the rise of ultrasound-guided techniques such as EBUS.
