Bethune rib shears

A heavy-duty cutting instrument with long handles and a short, hook-shaped curved blade, designed to cut through ribs.

How it is used

Used during thoracotomy or rib resection when one or more ribs must be divided to enlarge access to the thoracic cavity.

Clinical tip

Used after the rib has been subperiosteally freed with a raspatory, to minimize the risk of injuring the intercostal neurovascular bundle.
