Suspension laryngoscope (Kleinsasser-type)
Rigid tubular laryngoscope fixed via a chest-mounted suspension arm/support, leaving the surgeon's hands free to operate under the microscope or with laryngeal microsurgery instruments.
How it is used
Standard access route for laryngeal microsurgery (biopsies, excision of polyps or vocal nodules, CO2 laser surgery).
Clinical tip
Difficult laryngeal exposure is graded IIB, III or IV on a standard scale; the patient is placed in the Boyce position to ease transoral insertion.
