Aural (otologic) speculum
A hollow metal cone, available in several diameters, inserted into the external auditory canal to straighten its path and facilitate visualization under the microscope.
How it is used
Used in ear microsurgery (tympanoplasty, myringotomy) to keep the ear canal open and allow instrumental manipulation under microscopic view.
Clinical tip
The largest diameter the canal allows without trauma should be chosen to maximize the field of view under the microscope.
