Lempert raspatory/elevator
A curved, double-ended instrument with a wide, completely blunt (non-cutting) blade, available in various widths.
How it is used
Used to elevate the periosteum off the mastoid cortex and the skin/soft tissue off the posterior canal wall in the endaural and postauricular approaches to ear surgery.
Clinical tip
Designed by Julius Lempert for his one-stage endaural fenestration operation (1938) for otosclerosis, a procedure superseded since 1956 by stapedectomy; the instrument itself, however, has outlived the original technique and is still manufactured and used as a general raspatory in endaural and postauricular approaches.
