Polymer locking ligation clip (Hem-o-lok)
A non-metallic polymer clip with a ratchet-style locking tip that, once closed around a structure, cannot reopen; applied with a dedicated clip applier.
How it is used
Securely ligates vessels or tubular structures (renal vein, gonadal vessels, etc.) during laparoscopic or robotic urologic surgery such as nephrectomy.
Clinical tip
In 2006 the FDA recalled/contraindicated its sole use to ligate the renal artery in laparoscopic living-donor nephrectomy, due to clip-dislodgement risk and severe haemorrhage; transfixion or another method is required for that vessel.
