Pigtail catheter
A multi-perforated catheter with a coiled, pig-tail-shaped tip, designed to prevent inadvertent displacement from the cavity where it is placed.
How it is used
Used in angiography for contrast injection into cardiac chambers or large vessels, and as a drain for fluid collections (pleural, abdominal).
Clinical tip
The coiled shape re-forms automatically once the straight stylet that temporarily holds it extended during insertion is withdrawn.
