Double-J (JJ) ureteral stent
A thin flexible plastic tube with both ends curled into a coil ("pigtail"), one sitting in the renal pelvis and the other in the bladder.
How it is used
Keeps the ureter open and drains urine from the kidney to the bladder around an obstruction (stones, tumour, stricture) or protects a ureteral repair; typically placed cystoscopically over a guidewire.
Clinical tip
A reminder/tracking system for removal or exchange (typically at 4-6 weeks) is essential: a forgotten stent can become severely encrusted.
