Tuohy needle

A large-bore hypodermic needle with a slightly curved tip and lateral opening (Huber point), designed to locate the epidural space and direct a catheter through it.

How it is used

Used to perform epidural anesthesia or analgesia, typically with the loss-of-resistance technique, and to thread the epidural catheter for continuous local anesthetic administration.

Clinical tip

The lateral-opening bevel allows the catheter to be directed cephalad without the needle tip shearing it.
