Coaxial lung biopsy needle
Coaxial introducer needle (typically 17-19G) through which an 18-20G cutting core-biopsy needle is passed repeatedly without re-puncturing the chest wall, under CT guidance; distinct from the already-catalogued thoracocentesis needle, which aspirates pleural fluid rather than sampling solid tissue.
How it is used
Tissue diagnosis of indeterminate pulmonary nodules/masses.
Clinical tip
Core-needle biopsy gives a higher percentage of diagnostically adequate samples than fine-needle aspiration, while FNA carries a lower pneumothorax rate.
