Cannulated screw
A screw with a hollow central channel running its full length, allowing it to be inserted over a Kirschner wire that has already been placed in the bone.
How it is used
Used in percutaneous or minimally invasive fixation, typically cannulated cancellous screws for femoral neck, malleolar or scaphoid fractures, and also in combination with reconstruction plates.
Clinical tip
The central channel allows the guide wire to be placed first under fluoroscopic control and its position checked before passing the definitive screw; depending on the model, locked-cannulated or metaphyseal variants also exist.
