A device with a thin gas-permeable membrane, typically made of hollow fibers, that separates the blood flow from the gas flow within the cardiopulmonary bypass circuit.
How it is used
It adds oxygen to and removes carbon dioxide from the blood, replacing lung function while the patient is on cardiopulmonary bypass.
