Teflon felt pledget
Small PTFE felt square or strip placed under mattress sutures to spread suture tension over a wider tissue surface; distinct from the already-catalogued gauze pledget, which is a completely different material and use.
How it is used
Anchoring the prosthesis sewing ring in valve replacement, and reinforcing fragile or calcified aortic/annular tissue.
Clinical tip
Classic single-face pledgets can flip or tangle during tying, lengthening clamp time, which has motivated newer bidirectional side-exit designs.
