Deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrode
A thin insulated wire with several metal contacts at its tip, implanted through a burr hole into a deep target brain nucleus and connected, via a subcutaneous extension, to an implantable pulse generator placed in the chest.
How it is used
Used in functional neurosurgery to treat Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, dystonia and other movement or neuropsychiatric disorders through continuous electrical stimulation of a target nucleus.
