Steinmann pin
A rigid steel pin of larger diameter than a Kirschner wire (roughly 4-6 mm), with a sharpened tip.
How it is used
Inserted through bone (e.g. tibia or femur) to apply skeletal traction or as a temporary fixation element in long-bone fractures.
Clinical tip
A pin placed in the proximal tibia is a common way to apply skeletal traction for femoral shaft fractures.
