Ochsenbein chisel

Single-beveled chisel with a spoon/half-round blade and the cutting edge on its convex face, mounted on a single- or double-ended straight handle.

How it is used

Reshaping and recontouring alveolar bone (ostectomy/osteoplasty) in periodontal crown-lengthening or pocket-reduction surgery, and secondary flap incisions to remove residual connective fibers.

Clinical tip

Unlike an osteotome, it is not struck with a mallet: it is used with controlled hand pressure, removing small shavings of bone with each pass.
