Scleral buckle

A silicone band or sponge sutured onto the sclera to indent the eye wall and bring the retinal pigment epithelium closer to the detached retina; it may be segmental (a localized sponge) or circumferential (a 360° band).

How it is used

Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment surgery, alone or combined with vitrectomy, after applying cryotherapy or laser around each retinal tear.

Clinical tip

Cryotherapy or laser is applied around each tear before placing the buckle, to generate the chorioretinal scar that fixes the retina.
