Capsular tension ring (CTR)

An open, C-shaped PMMA ring inserted into the capsular bag to distribute tension and stabilize it when there is zonular weakness or dehiscence.

How it is used

Phacoemulsification with weak zonules (pseudoexfoliation, high myopia, lens subluxation, prior vitrectomy) to prevent bag dislocation and facilitate IOL placement.

Clinical tip

Implanting it too early can make cortex removal more difficult, while implanting it late can be complicated by posterior capsule fluctuations.
