Annuloplasty ring

Rigid, semi-rigid, or flexible prosthetic ring (e.g. cobalt-chromium bands under a polyester-covered silicone, saddle-shaped sewing cuff), sutured around the native valve annulus; distinct from the already-catalogued valve sizer (the reusable instrument used to choose the size).

How it is used

Permanent implant for mitral or tricuspid valve repair (not replacement), to restore annular size/shape and prevent recurrent dilation.

Clinical tip

Physio-type rings with a rigid anterior segment help prevent systolic anterior motion (SAM) of the mitral valve.
