Veress needle
Long needle with a beveled-tip outer cannula and a spring-loaded, retractable inner stylet that springs forward on entering a cavity with no resistance.
How it is used
Creating the pneumoperitoneum by insufflating CO2 into the abdominal cavity before trocar entry, in the closed laparoscopic technique.
Clinical tip
The click of the spring as it crosses the peritoneum, together with a negative-aspiration check (the saline drop test), helps confirm correct placement before insufflating.
